Venezuela earthquakes leave 1943 dead as international aid arrives

The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes on June 24 caused at least 1943 deaths and 10571 injuries in Venezuela. Rescue teams continue operations six days later, while Argentina and MLB send assistance.

The Venezuelan government confirmed on Tuesday, June 30, that there are 1943 dead, 10571 injured and 6461 people rescued. The earthquakes occurred last Wednesday and were followed by about 300 aftershocks.

Argentina sent two additional planes with 38 people and rescue equipment from El Palomar base. This adds to the first shipment last Friday that included 24 rescuers and four dogs.

MLB and the Players Association donated one million dollars to the Red Cross for shelters, medical care and drinking water. Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. noted baseball's historic ties with Venezuela.

NASA estimated that more than 58870 buildings likely suffered damage based on satellite images from June 25. The search for missing persons, such as Argentine boy Lucas Gámez, continues in La Guaira.
