A 13-year-old student at Instituto São José in Rio Branco, Acre, carried out a shooting on Tuesday morning (May 5, 2026), killing two inspectors and injuring others. The youth used his stepfather's gun and was taken into custody at the scene. Classes were suspended for three days across the state network.
The attack took place at Instituto São José on Rua Benjamim Constant in Rio Branco, killing Alzenir Pereira da Silva, 53, and Raquel Sales Feitosa, 36, at the scene. The Acre government stated four people were hit: three staff and one student, with the others taken to emergency care. Military Police reported the teen fired in a corridor near the director's office and surrendered afterward, carrying two extra loaded magazines.
The perpetrator used a pistol owned by his stepfather, described as a police officer in one source and lawyer in another. The stepfather was detained for questioning, and the weapon seized. Civil Police opened an investigation into motive, sequence, and liabilities, with bullying cited by the teen but unconfirmed.
Parents and witnesses showed despair. "I felt the ground vanish. You never imagine this happening," said Joelma Soares de Souza, mother of a student. Nearby tire shop owner Jeziel Frota rushed to save his son: "I dropped my plate of food and ran to save my son." A student said school renovations initially mistook shots for construction noise.
The government suspended classes for three days statewide, provided psychosocial support, and expressed solidarity. Rio Branco city hall called it a "tragic assault." Acre's Court of Justice stressed protecting minors' images under the ECA.
