Around 50 households in Uppsala have joined forces to grow potatoes on a field in Håga. The project aims to strengthen food security and community ties.
Rows of newly planted potatoes cover a field in Håga outside Uppsala. Around 50 households are taking part in the project, with each expected to harvest between 70 and 140 kilograms.
The potatoes will be stored at a nearby school to serve as a local bank for participants. The land was loaned by a local farmer and the growing area covers about 1000 square meters.
Several associations, including Godahemnätverket, are behind the initiative. Agronomist William Whitman is one of the initiators.
– We are doing this above all because we are doing it together with others, says Kathrin Theelen.
– We are doing this to increase the city's self-sufficiency and make growing accessible to more people, says William Whitman.
