It follows their previous effort, 'Further Still', and shifts focus from intense aggression to building atmosphere, tension, and emotional resonance. The group's evolution has occurred largely outside mainstream touring and promotional circuits, enabling their sound to evolve from traditional black metal into something more abstract and introspective. Lyrically, 'Hidden Fires Burn Hottest' portrays emotions as tangible environments. For instance, 'No Such Place' delves into an impossible yet existent location, while 'Immortality Project' examines infinite possibilities as a weighty obligation rather than a boon. Recorded by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East, the album was mixed and mastered by Richard Chowenhill of Agriculture. Several compositions originated before the pandemic, offering the band time to refine them. Vocalist Bryan Manning composed lyrics ahead of schedule for the first time, easing pressures and altering the creative process. Departing from the precision of 'Further Still', this work embraces a more expansive and unconventional approach, including 'Mementos', described as the band's inaugural love song. Nonetheless, it eschews tidy conclusions, drawing from personal struggles and disquieting reflections, occasionally infused with subtle dark humor.
