The St. Louis Cardinals are turning to homegrown arms to strengthen their rotation. Left-hander Brycen Mautz made his major league debut in relief this week, providing three innings against the Brewers.
Mautz's appearance came as the team needed length from its bullpen. Through 52 games this season, 81 percent of Cardinals starts have come from pitchers who have not yet reached free agency. The club has spent just over $20 million on its five-man rotation.
