The Congress of South African Trade Unions and allies marched in Cape Town and Mpumalanga on Thursday to urge intervention over rising costs of living.
COSATU, the South African Communist Party, the South African National Civic Organisation and the African National Congress marched to the City of Cape Town and Parliament. Participants highlighted rising prices for water, electricity, food and fuel.
SACP Central Committee member Barry Mitchell said most working families cannot survive from month to month due to high food and transport costs. He called for farm cooperatives to ease the burden.
In Mpumalanga, COSATU deputy president Mike Shingange addressed a demonstration at Matsamo Mall in Jeppes Reef. He urged employers and government to enforce the national minimum wage and provide relief from debt.
Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala received a memorandum outside Parliament. She acknowledged the challenges of rising living costs, unemployment, poverty and inequality.
