Drivers told to avoid Muhoroni-Kisumu highway after bridge collapse

Motorists have been advised to avoid the Muhoroni-Kisumu highway following the collapse of a bridge that has rendered the road impassable.

The Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) issued an alert on Saturday, June 27, stating that one of the bridges between Muhoroni and Kisumu had collapsed on Saturday evening. The 60-kilometre highway is now impassable, with no official communication yet from the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) on the cause or repair timeline.

LoDDCA said in a statement: "One of the bridges between Muhoroni and Kisumu road has collapsed. The road is impassable." The association advised motorists travelling between Kisumu and Muhoroni to use alternative routes via Kericho or Chemelil and to follow directions from traffic officers.

The affected stretch serves as a key corridor linking Kisumu City to Kericho and Nandi counties, as well as the sugar belt including the Miwani, Chemelil, and Muhoroni factories. The road features three main bridges over the Nyando, Kibos, and Mbogo rivers, though it remains unconfirmed which one collapsed. The incident occurred hours after a separate road accident on the nearby Londiani–Muhoroni Highway.
