The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute and Arba Minch University have been approved as Regional Training Centers for the World Meteorological Organization.
The approval came during the 80th session of the World Meteorological Organization’s Executive Council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. The Ethiopian institutions will now serve as hubs for training professionals across Africa in meteorology, hydrology, and climate services.
The process to achieve this status took more than two years. It involved presenting Ethiopia’s interest to the WMO Secretary-General and the Africa Management Board, along with internal self-assessments, external evaluations, and endorsement by the WMO Capacity Development Panel.
Next steps include making the centers fully operational to train professionals from across the continent.
