Egypt and Rwanda discussed expanding cooperation on water projects during meetings in Cairo this month, building on the executive action plan signed earlier this year. Officials reviewed progress on a bilateral memorandum and agreed on new initiatives for rainwater harvesting and groundwater exploration.
Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, hosted the Rwandan delegation for the second meeting of the joint steering committee. The sessions ran from May 11 to 14 and focused on implementing the executive action plan signed during Sewilam’s visit to Kigali in January 2026.
Both sides agreed to combine flood protection measures with rainwater harvesting dams using nature-based solutions. They also selected four sites for new groundwater stations, with geophysical studies set to start soon.
Sewilam noted progress on capacity-building efforts, including a first joint training programme planned for June 2026. He highlighted Egypt’s new $100 million financing mechanism to support development projects in southern Nile Basin countries and invited Rwanda to attend Cairo Water Week in October.
