تم اعتماد المعهد الإثيوبي للأرصاد الجوية وجامعة أربا مينش كمراكز تدريب إقليمية تابعة للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية.

جاء هذا الاعتماد خلال الدورة الثمانين لاجتماع المجلس التنفيذي للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية في جنيف بسويسرا. وستعمل المؤسسات الإثيوبية الآن كمراكز لتدريب المتخصصين من جميع أنحاء أفريقيا في مجالات الأرصاد الجوية والهيدرولوجيا والخدمات المناخية.استغرقت عملية الحصول على هذا الوضع أكثر من عامين، وتضمنت تقديم اهتمام إثيوبيا إلى الأمين العام للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية ومجلس إدارة أفريقيا، إلى جانب إجراء تقييمات ذاتية داخلية، وعمليات تقييم خارجية، والحصول على تأييد من لجنة تنمية القدرات التابعة للمنظمة.تشمل الخطوات التالية جعل هذه المراكز تعمل بكامل طاقتها لتدريب المهنيين من كافة أنحاء القارة.
