The rescue service's duty officer Patrick Johansson told the newspaper: "We suspect it is a hand grenade."
Police confirmed they are on site with several patrols. Duty officer Anna Lätt said: "We are on site with several patrols and are investigating what happened."
There are currently no reports of injuries. Police are working to clarify the circumstances of the explosion in the apartment building where it took place. Eskilstuna is located in Södermanland and is a city with about 70,000 inhabitants.
