Florida man charged with manslaughter after urging girlfriend to shoot herself

A 41-year-old Florida man faces a manslaughter charge after allegedly handing a gun to his girlfriend during an argument and repeatedly telling her to kill herself, police said. The woman, 37-year-old Camille Mary McGonigle, shot herself in the head and died weeks later. Surveillance video captured the incident, contradicting the man's initial account.

On January 24, deputies from the Broward County Sheriff's Office responded to a home in the 4000 block of Northeast Eighth Avenue in Oakland Park, Florida, around 2 p.m. for a shooting. They found Camille Mary McGonigle, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries on February 9, according to authorities. Miguel Hernandez, 41, her boyfriend, was holding her head and screaming for help when officers arrived. A glass pipe used for drugs was found in the home. Hernandez initially told investigators that McGonigle had a history of suicidal statements during arguments, which he dismissed, noting her brother's suicide about two years earlier. He claimed that about a week prior, she had picked up a gun during a fight but he took it away. On the day of the incident, he said she grabbed the gun again from the bed, challenged him verbally from 3 or 4 feet away, and then shot herself in the head. Hernandez said he believed it was an accident. However, home surveillance footage showed a different sequence. It depicted the couple arguing, Hernandez leaving and returning, racking the gun, and handing it to McGonigle. He then yelled multiple times, 'Go ahead and do it' and 'Go ahead and do it, you p—y,' urging her to kill herself, the affidavit states. After the shot, he shouted 'Oh my God, baby' and called for his mother to dial 911. Confronted with the video, Hernandez admitted handing her the gun but said he was calling her bluff and did not think she would fire. The Broward County State Attorney's Office issued an arrest warrant on March 19, and Hernandez was taken into custody on March 22. He remains in Broward County Jail without bond, with his next court date set for May 28. McGonigle, originally from Pennsylvania and known as Camie, leaves behind a young son.
