In 1993, he was elected as Indonesia's 6th Vice President alongside Soeharto until 1998. Afterward, he served as Chairman of the ABRI Retired Warriors Association (Pepabri) from 1998 to 2003, and in 2005 joined a critical forum with Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri.
