Try Sutrisno was born on November 15, 1935, in Surabaya, East Java, to a modest family with father Subandi, an ambulance driver, and mother Mardiyah. His military career began young, including serving as a courier against the Dutch and participating in suppressing the PRRI rebellion in 1957. In 1993, he was elected as Indonesia's 6th Vice President alongside Soeharto until 1998. Afterward, he served as Chairman of the ABRI Retired Warriors Association (Pepabri) from 1998 to 2003, and in 2005 joined a critical forum with Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri. Until his death, he remained active as Deputy Chairman of the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) for 2022–2027 and attended national events like August 17 ceremonies and TNI's anniversary.

His passing drew condolences from various figures. Tanpa pamrih, tak kenal lelah." National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said, "Selamat Jalan Bapak Almarhum Try Sutrisno, selamat jalan pahlawan bangsa." Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, who knew him since 1995, stated, "Beliau ini adalah sosok bapak bangsa yang merangkul semua orang." State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi affirmed, "Beliau adalah salah satu putra terbaik bangsa Indonesia yang telah mengabdikan diri seluruh hidupnya untuk bangsa dan negara."
