The International Criminal Court Trial Chamber III ruled on May 22 that former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte will stay detained in The Hague. The decision followed a review of his request for interim release based on health concerns.
The chamber found no notable change in circumstances that would support temporary liberty. Medical reports from three ICC-appointed experts showed no information warranting release despite claims of falls and memory issues.
Judges cited Duterte’s refusal to recognize the court’s jurisdiction as evidence he would not comply with release conditions. They also noted his access to resources and supporters in the Philippines as factors increasing flight risk.
The confirmation of charges against Duterte in April was viewed as heightening the risk of absconding. A status conference is scheduled for May 27 to discuss trial timelines and procedures.
