The Senate impeachment court will open the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, July 6, with prosecutors ready to present their case on charges including misuse of funds and unexplained wealth.
House prosecutors said they are prepared for the proceedings scheduled to start at 2 p.m. They challenged Duterte not to skip the trial and urged her to face the allegations directly.
Palace press officer Claire Castro stated it would be better for Duterte to appear personally if she wants to prove her innocence. She noted that Duterte had previously mentioned wanting a “bloodbath” and could use the trial to answer questions.
Senators agreed during a caucus to return a sealed box of tax records from the Bureau of Internal Revenue to the House prosecution panel. Sen. Panfilo Lacson said the impeachment court has no role in keeping or unsealing the evidence.
Up to 6,000 police officers will secure the Senate area during the trial. Protesters will not be allowed near the Senate gate, and barriers are in place along Diokno Boulevard.
