The Kenyan Ministry of Health has reassured citizens of full preparedness for Ebola threats following reports that the United States may send exposed patients to Kenya for monitoring.
Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale announced on May 27 that Kenya is setting up holding areas at border points with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The government has deployed screeners and mobile laboratories at major crossings while running three national labs around the clock for testing.
Duale added that officials are tracing anyone who visited affected regions in the past month and urged families to seek care for relatives showing symptoms after travel to Uganda or the DRC. Over 55,000 people have been screened at entry points with no positive cases recorded.
The Ministry of Health issued a statement noting ongoing discussions with the US on Ebola preparedness but stressed that any cooperation will follow Kenya's national laws and biosafety standards. Reports from the Wall Street Journal and New York Times indicated that the US administration is considering a quarantine facility in Kenya pending approval, with plans to deploy public health officers if approved.
