Louisiana Republicans approved a new congressional map that eliminates one of the state's two majority-Black House districts. The change follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the Voting Rights Act.
Republicans in the Louisiana legislature passed the map on Friday and sent it to Gov. Jeff Landry, who is expected to approve it. The new boundaries give the GOP an advantage in five of the state's six districts ahead of the midterms. They erase the district held by Rep. Cleo Fields that stretched from Shreveport to Baton Rouge and leave Rep. Troy Carter's New Orleans-based seat largely intact but redrawn.
