Minor allegedly broke into aunt's house to get Glock pistol used in Tacloban school shooting

One of two minors in the June 22 Tacloban school shooting obtained the Glock pistol by breaking into his aunt's house, according to reports presented during a Senate hearing on July 1.

The shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City on June 22 killed three students and injured 20 others. The 14-year-old minor, identified by the alias Nash, allegedly broke into his aunt's house to obtain the firearm used in the attack. He and a 15-year-old minor, known as Rod, are both now under custody at the Regional Rehabilitation Center for the Youth in Tanauan, Leyte.

During the Senate committee hearing on July 1, relatives of injured students shared accounts of the incident. Gerric Bituin, a friend of Nash, was shot in the back while trying to hide; the bullet passed through his neck and fractured his chin. Kaye Lapidario was shot in the hip and thigh after closing her classroom door to block the shooters.

The 15-year-old faces murder complaints, while the 14-year-old is exempt from criminal liability and will undergo an intervention program. Family members called for justice and lowering the age of criminal liability from 15 to 12 years old.
