Residents of Chitra Nagar in Kotturpuram staged a road blockade and sit-in on Saturday to protest alleged irregularities in the allotment of apartments under a Tamil Nadu housing scheme.
More than 1,500 tenements were built under the scheme by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board. The flats were allotted last week, but around 195 families who have lived in the area for over 50 years were reportedly denied housing.
The protesters claimed the apartments went to people from Saidapet with support from DMK functionaries. They said repeated petitions to the board had received no response.
The sit-in on Gandhi Mandapam Road lasted over an hour and disrupted traffic between Adyar and Nandanam. Police detained the demonstrators after talks to disperse them failed.
