A semi-truck slid off the B495 highway in the Cuxhaven district on Monday afternoon and crashed onto a pedestrian and bike path. The 56-year-old driver was seriously injured and had to be freed by firefighters.
The accident occurred between Neuland and Hemmoor. The truck broke through the guardrail and slid down the slope. The driver was trapped in the cab and taken to hospital.
The semi-truck was carrying bitumen in a tank trailer. Diesel fuel leaked after the crash, while the bitumen remained in the tank. Damage is estimated at well over 100,000 euros.
Recovery of the vehicle was halted on Monday evening and is set to resume on Tuesday. The B495 is expected to be closed from 10 a.m. for several hours. The cause of the accident remains unclear.
