Former President López Obrador promoted deposits to this account to purchase medicines and food for Cuba amid its energy crisis worsened by U.S. sanctions since January. Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña deposited 64,000 pesos, which reached the account this time after previous donations were returned.
Sheinbaum defended historical Mexico-Cuba solidarity, noting Cuba's support for Mexico's oil expropriation before 1959. On oil shipments, she said Mexican private companies seek to sell fuel to Cuban privates, such as hotels, without harming U.S. relations.
