Suspect in girlfriend's murder dies by suicide in custody

A double tragedy has struck Bomet County after a man suspected of murdering his pregnant girlfriend died in police custody, allegedly by suicide. Caroline Chepkoech Ngetich, a 33-year-old teacher, passed away on January 5, 2026, and suspect Anthony Njenga Kariuki took his life on Thursday evening.

The family of Caroline Chepkoech Ngetich, a teacher at Cheptagum Primary Secondary School in Bomet East Sub-County, was preparing her funeral when they learned of the main suspect in her murder's death. Caroline, recently employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), died under suspicious circumstances on January 5, 2026.

Anthony Njenga Kariuki, also 33, was arrested three days before his death after a post-mortem report contradicted his account of his girlfriend's passing. The couple lived together in Longisa Trading Centre.

Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Mwenda stated: “The suspect was arrested and brought to court on Thursday afternoon, where the court ordered him detained for seven days pending investigations before charges.” He added that a police officer on routine check found him hanged using a sock in his cell at Longisa Police Station.

Kariuki's body was taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary, the same facility holding Caroline's body awaiting collection by relatives for a Friday funeral. These deaths have left more questions than answers about the incident.
