He said Syekh Ahmad Al Misry, alias SAM, exploited power dynamics with methods like 'physical checks' to approach santri, including promises of scholarships to Egypt. "'Are you sure you want it? Okay, I'll do a physical check.' Open your shirt, check for tattoos or defects," Mahdi said, referring to an incident in Purbalingga.
Victims suffer severe trauma, with some hysterical upon seeing ustaz and losing trust in religious figures. "He was hysterical seeing me. He even said, 'I no longer trust ustaz. I've even thought about apostasy!'" Mahdi recounted about a victim in Bogor. Allegations also include religious defamation, such as comparing acts to Prophet Muhammad and Sayyidina Ali, and forcing porn viewing with narratives involving scholars.
Mahdi claimed intimidation by rogue generals and retirees. Meanwhile, Syekh Ahmad Al Misry denied the accusations via Instagram on April 22, 2026. "The accusation of harassment against santri is not true," he stated. He affirmed his status as a witness, not suspect, and has submitted evidence to his legal team.
SAM has been in Egypt since March 16, 2026, to accompany his mother for surgery on March 17, and fulfilled a police summons online on March 30. He quoted Quran Surat Al-Hujurat verse 6 and Prophet's hadiths to urge verifying information before spreading it.
