Turkish court convicts four over insecticide deaths of German family

A Turkish court convicted a hotel owner and three pest control workers for the deaths of a German family of four who were poisoned by insecticide at a hotel in Istanbul.

The convictions came after the Bocek family fell ill in November while staying at the Harbour Suites Old City hotel in Istanbul's Fatih district. The family had complained of nausea and vomiting and were later found to have been exposed to phosphine gas used to treat a bedbug infestation.

Six-year-old Kadir Muhammet and his three-year-old sister Masal died on November 13. Their mother Cigdem died the next day and their father Servet died on November 17.

The court sentenced hotel owner Hakan Oglak to 13 years and four months in prison. DSS Pest Control owners Zeki Kisi and Serkan Kisi each received 18-year sentences while employee Dogan Cagferoglu was sentenced to 12 years. All four were expected to appeal.
