A major fire on a former military training ground in Müritz National Park has led to renewed evacuations in Granzin and Granziner Mühle. The blaze has spread across 118 hectares and is now 1.4 kilometres from the village.
The fire has now burned for a second night in a row. A spokesman for the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district said the wind had turned and strengthened slightly, bringing the flames closer to Granzin.
Hundreds of firefighters are deployed, most recently around 250 personnel. Because of old ammunition on the site, crews must maintain a one-kilometre safety distance. Additional forces are being requested.
Rain is expected at the earliest on Thursday, more likely on Friday. The spokesman said the fire would keep responders occupied for several more days. A similar blaze on a nearby munitions-contaminated site at the end of June had also lasted several days.
