Wildfire in Müritz National Park expands to 269 hectares

A major fire on a former military training ground inside Müritz National Park has spread further and now covers 269 hectares.

The fire was reported on Monday. Around 375 emergency personnel are currently on site. Because of old ammunition in the area, crews are fighting the blaze from outside using irrigation sprinklers and other equipment.

Support from Bavaria with 20 helpers, water sprinklers and a 2,000-metre hose is expected in the morning. Environment Minister Till Backhaus plans to visit the region today. An ABC reconnaissance vehicle is checking for possible toxic gases.

The evacuation of Granzin and Granziner Mühle remains in force. The fire is moving toward Granzin. Significant rain is not expected until the end of the week, so the operation is likely to continue for several more days.
