Zach Cregger recalls near-fatal stunt during Resident Evil filming

Director Zach Cregger described a practical stunt on the set of the upcoming Resident Evil film that came close to seriously injuring star Austin Abrams. The sequence involved real explosions and falling props during a chase scene. The Sony movie is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Sept. 18.

Cregger explained the scene during a recent Q&A session. Abrams, playing medical courier Bryan, runs down a street as zombies leap from rooftops on either side. The production used 150-pound blood bags dropped from cranes to create the effect without relying on visual effects.

One bag nearly struck the actor. “It would’ve killed him. If he had been one step to the right, he would’ve died,” Cregger said. The director added that the completed shot appears in the film.

Cregger co-wrote the project with Shay Hatten. The cast also features Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser and Johnno Wilson. The film adapts the 1996 Capcom video game.
