9-1-1 creator stands by controversial death of Bobby Nash

Tim Minear, co-creator of the ABC series 9-1-1, has defended his decision to kill off the character Bobby Nash despite widespread fan backlash. The death occurred in season 8, episode 15, when the Los Angeles Fire Department captain perished in a chemical lab explosion.

Minear described the choice as a creative one made to maintain real stakes in the procedural drama. "If the stakes are never real, if there's really no chance that any of this peril in which these characters find themselves amounts to anything, I think the show could die," he said.

He noted that plans for a sacrificial death for Bobby had existed for some time. "I had the opportunity to give somebody an epic death and I didn't want to waste it," Minear explained.

The showrunner also acknowledged regret over the move while insisting it was correct for the story. "I have tons of regret about it. I still think it was the right move. But it's been really wrenching for me," he added.

Financial pressures on network shows played a role in the casting change as well, according to Minear. The series has continued with season 10 approaching as other characters carry forward Bobby's legacy.
