Amazon greenlights two seasons of God of War TV series

Amazon has ordered two seasons of a TV adaptation of the popular God of War video game franchise, with pre-production underway in Vancouver. The series, set in Norse mythology, follows Spartan warrior Kratos and his son Atreus on a perilous journey. Filming is slated to start in 2026, aiming for a 2027 release on Prime Video.

The God of War television series, inspired by Sony's mythology-based game franchise, marks one of Amazon's ambitious upcoming projects. Initially ordered in 2022, pre-production has recently commenced in Vancouver, signaling momentum for the adaptation.

Ronald D. Moore, acclaimed for his work on Outlander, For All Mankind, and Battlestar Galactica, serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer—a role announced in 2024. Directing the first two episodes is Frederick E.O. Toye, whose credits include Fallout, Shōgun (where he earned a Drama Series Emmy for the episode Crimson Sky), Lost, The Walking Dead, Westworld, Watchmen, and Snowpiercer.

Set in the Viking age, the plot draws from the games' Norse mythology arc. Many years after his rampage against the Olympian gods, Kratos has settled in ancient Norway. The official logline describes: "God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."

Their quest spans the nine realms, where they befriend Mímir, confront Odin and Thor, and seek to avert Ragnarök, the prophesied end of the world.

Casting highlights include Ryan Hurst as Kratos, known for Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, and voicing Thor in the 2022 game God of War Ragnarök. Max Parker portrays Heimdall, Odin's son and Bifrost guardian, recently seen in Netflix's Boots. Teresa Palmer plays Sif, Thor's wife and goddess of wheat, earth, harvest, and family, with roles in Warm Bodies, Hacksaw Ridge, and A Discovery of Witches. Additional casting remains in progress.

Filming is expected to begin in 2026, with the series projected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027, following post-production and marketing phases.
