Emory Hunt has identified a key competition at safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into training camp. The matchup pits Jaquan Brisker against Darnell Savage for a potential roster spot.
Hunt made the comments Monday on CBS Sports HQ. He described Brisker as a player who offers stability and solid play after four seasons with the Chicago Bears. Savage, a former first-round pick by the Green Bay Packers, brings more ball skills but has shown inconsistency in recent years.
The Steelers have other established options at the position. DeShon Elliott returns from injury as a presumed starter, while Jalen Ramsey is expected to play safety in certain packages. This leaves room for one additional safety in sub-packages.
Brisker signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh this offseason. Savage and undrafted rookie Sebastian Castro are also competing for backup roles. Hunt noted that preferences for defensive style could determine the outcome of the battle.
