Anthony Pangilinan credits son Donny for watch passion

Actor Donny Pangilinan has inspired his father, Anthony Pangilinan, to develop a passion for collecting watches. During a recent media event in Taguig, the pair discussed how this hobby represents mutual learning and family legacy. Donny shared stories of his entry into watch collecting and the life lessons he gained from his father.

At a media event last month for the King Seiko Vanac watch in Taguig, Donny Pangilinan recounted how he first became interested in watches after high school. Guided by Enrique Miranda, who later married Donny's sister Ella, Donny purchased his initial timepiece from Seiko's Prospex line of diving watches.

"Starting that moment, parang something sparked within me. I have to start collecting these tiny pieces. It meant so much more than something on the wrist," Donny explained. For him, acquiring a watch marks significant milestones, such as his early steps into the entertainment industry, following his mother Maricel Laxa's path. He later passed this first watch to his assistant, who continues to wear it, serving as a reminder of Donny's beginnings.

Anthony Pangilinan, an author and motivational speaker, revealed that while he inherited watches from his grandfather, his deeper appreciation for collecting stems from Donny. Typically a pursuit passed from father to son, Anthony described it as a two-way exchange.

"I think it's mutual, it's always mutual. You learn something, foundation na 'yan, innovation [naman] 'yan, so pag-sama natin dalawa," Anthony said. He emphasized the sentimental value of watches, linking them to themes of quality, craftsmanship, and personal growth. "It's instrumental to guide someone when it comes to the legacy of quality, craftsmanship, and making an impact," he added. Anthony noted that true legacy lies in character, not achievements, a principle he and Maricel instill in their family.

Donny responded lightheartedly, pointing to the abundance of lessons in their household. He praised Anthony's ability to make others feel valued, recalling childhood "wars" with water balloons—occasionally spiked with soy sauce—where Anthony joined despite his demanding schedule.

"The biggest thing I learned and appreciate is the fact that when he's with you, he's with you," Donny said. Reflecting on these moments, he realized the effort involved. "If there's one thing I think I really learned from him, it's to value the time you spend with others, and you're never too busy with the ones you love," Donny concluded.
