Australia, Japan and Portugal back Egypt's efforts to contain regional military escalation

Australia, Japan and Portugal have backed Egypt's efforts to contain regional military escalation and support a diplomatic path to avoid an 'explosion' of violence, Egypt’s foreign ministry said. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate telephone calls with his counterparts from the three countries.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate telephone calls on Tuesday with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel to discuss the “critical phase” facing the region.

The three ministers expressed their “deep appreciation” for the intensive efforts led by Egyptian leadership to contain the dangerous escalation. They emphasised full support for Cairo’s role in defusing tensions, citing broad economic risks to global trade, freedom of navigation, supply chains, and food and energy security from continued conflict.

Abdelatty warned his counterparts that the current stage’s sensitivity requires concerted international and regional action to prevent an explosion with “highly dangerous consequences” for regional security and stability. He reviewed Egyptian proposals for a breakthrough and military calm, and addressed developments in the Palestinian territories, including efforts to restore security in Gaza, provide aid, and support an international stability force.

Egypt reaffirmed its “categorical condemnation” of Israeli annexation and settlement policies in the West Bank, as well as violations affecting Islamic holy sites. The ministers also discussed bilateral cooperation to enhance trade and investment, committing to intensify consultations for regional stability.
