The family of Rene Baterbonia is demanding more than an apology from Ateneo following the June 8 drowning deaths of two basketball players.
Rene Baterbonia aged 18 and teammate Divine Adili aged 19 died in a drowning incident during an Ateneo team-building activity on June 8 at a beach resort in Dipaculao Aurora. Rovelyn Baterbonia stated that coach Tab Baldwin and Ateneo had not explained the details to the families four days after the deaths.
"Apologies cannot make up for the death of my son" Rovelyn Baterbonia said in a translated social media message. She added that no picture or proof confirming her son's death had been sent despite social media posts.
Baldwin released an over eight-minute video apology on June 12. On June 13 his estranged wife Efi Kalogirou posted a video claiming she had warned Ateneo that children were not safe around him.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the bureau plans to subpoena Baldwin and Ateneo de Manila University officials as part of the ongoing investigation.
