Universal Pictures has set a May 19, 2028, release date for the next installment of The Mummy franchise, with Oscar winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning to their roles. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence. Details of the plot remain under wraps.

Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to return for a fourth film in Universal's The Mummy franchise, scheduled for theatrical release on May 19, 2028. Fraser will reprise his role as adventurer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz returns as Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell. The project marks the first time Weisz has appeared in the series since 2001's The Mummy Returns, as she did not participate in 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The movie is directed by Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for films such as Ready or Not and its upcoming sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. David Coggeshall, who wrote The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill, penned the screenplay. Plot specifics are being kept confidential.

Producing the film is Sean Daniel, who has been involved with every Mummy installment since the 1999 reboot, including The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and the 2017 Tom Cruise-led project. Joining him are William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein through Project X Entertainment. Fraser will executive produce alongside Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart.

The original 1999 film revived the classic monster IP, following a treasure hunter who awakens a cursed Egyptian priest. The franchise has grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. Universal's executive VP of production development Jay Polidoro and director of production development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio.

This announcement follows reports in November 2025 that Fraser and Weisz were in talks to star. Radio Silence previously collaborated with Universal on the 2024 vampire film Abigail.
