Carabineros reports two deaths in initial Easter weekend balance

Chile's Carabineros released its first traffic balance for the Easter long weekend on Friday, reporting two pedestrians killed in Antofagasta and the Metropolitan Region, along with 32 road accidents.

General Víctor Vielma, head of Road Traffic and Safety Zone, delivered the preliminary figures. Two pedestrians died: one in the Antofagasta region and another in the Metropolitan Region. There were 32 road accidents and ten people injured to varying degrees.

Over 162,000 vehicles left the Metropolitan Region for various parts of the country. Carabineros checked about 13,500 drivers, conducted more than 2,900 tests, and detained 28 people: 21 for alcohol and seven for drugs.

Authorities issued 290 infractions, mainly for speeding (165), failure to use seatbelts (93), and lack of child restraint systems (32). General Vielma stated: “We as Carabineros will continue deployed nationwide conducting controls and inspections to detect all those irresponsible drivers who insist on these road behaviors that endanger other road users.”

By comparison, last year's first balance reported only one fatal accident. Vielma urged pedestrians to take all necessary precautions and cross in designated areas.
