The Centre has approved a 50 km eight-lane greenfield corridor linking Aroor and Angamaly. The project aims to ease congestion on existing routes around Kochi.
The long-pending Kochi Bypass project received Central approval for the new corridor on NH 66 and NH 544. It will allow inter-district and other vehicles to bypass the congested Aroor-Edapally stretch and multiple junctions.
The project was first proposed a decade ago as a 44 km six-lane link from Nettoor to Karayamparambu. It had stalled after the 3A notification expired in 2024.
Benny Behanan, MP, said a fresh 3A notification for the eight-lane project would be issued shortly. The Centre has allowed land acquisition at a 70-metre width, up from the earlier 45 metres.
NHAI sources stated that further project details are still awaited. The alignment extension to Aroor has raised questions about the planned trumpet flyover at Nettoor.
