China suspends three Brazilian beef plants over banned residue

China has temporarily suspended imports from three Brazilian slaughterhouses after detecting residues of a banned synthetic hormone.

China’s General Administration of Customs identified residues of acetato de medroxiprogesterona in shipments from JBS’s plant in Pontes e Lacerda (MT), PrimaFoods’s facility in Araguari (MG) and Vale Grande Indústria e Comércio de Alimentos, operating as Frialto, in Matupá (MT).

Abiec stated that the suspension is temporary and preventive to allow traceability of raw materials and technical measures by the companies and authorities. The association noted that the issue is under technical discussion between Brazil and China for swift normalization.

The action follows the recent clearance of three other Brazilian plants, including a JBS unit in Mozarlândia (GO). Sixty-three Brazilian facilities are currently authorized to export beef to China, the main destination for the product.
