DepEd sets June 8 opening for 2026-2027 public school year under three-term calendar

Education Secretary Sonny Angara signed DepEd Order No. 009, Series of 2026, on April 16, officially setting public school opening on Monday, June 8, for the 2026-2027 school year under the approved three-term calendar policy—from which private schools are exempt.

In Manila, the Department of Education has finalized the school calendar for public schools in the 2026-2027 school year, following the policy's proposal, stakeholder approvals, and clarification on private school flexibility. Classes will run from June 8, 2026, to April 8, 2027, totaling 201 class days across three terms, with adjustments possible for unforeseen events.

"It shall consist of 201 class days, from the first day of Term 1 to the last day of Term 3. Adjustments to the school calendar due to unforeseen circumstances may be made through subsequent issuances," Angara stated.

The structure—previously outlined as June-September, September-December, and January-March—promotes continuous learning, longer instructional periods, reduced teacher workload, and equitable outcomes, building on extensive consultations and endorsements from public school leaders. Private schools, state universities, colleges, and Philippine Schools Overseas (serving over 25,000 learners) may adopt it but must ensure 200-220 class days.

After initially advancing the 2025-2026 school year end to June 5, the Ministry of Public Education has reversed course and will keep the original calendar, with classes ending July 15, 2026.

Private schools are free to adopt their own calendar structures, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said, following statements from the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations that private schools need not follow the three-term school calendar.

The Department of Education has allowed school-based personnel to work from home every Friday during the end-of-school-year break. DepEd Undersecretary Fatima Lipp Panontongan issued the memorandum on April 9, amending an earlier policy. The move supports energy conservation efforts.

The Instituto de Educación de Aguascalientes set a 14-day vacation period from April 20 to May 4 for preschool, primary, and secondary students in public and private schools. The break aligns with the Feria Nacional de San Marcos and offsets the lack of full Semana Santa holidays.
