A National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, died after being struck by stray bullets during a shootout between soldiers and robbers in Abuja. The incident occurred early on Saturday in Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei. The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation.
Troops from the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they received a distress call about a robbery in Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory. Upon arrival in the early hours of Saturday, April 26, they came under fire from fleeing armed robbers, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.
Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving NYSC corps member, was caught in the crossfire and succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by the troops to secure the area. Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at Headquarters Guards Brigade, Olawuyi Odunola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
"In the course of the engagement, Mr Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries," Odunola said.
The Guards Brigade Commander extended condolences to Jamiu's family and the NYSC. The deceased's remains have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital and handed over to authorities. A thorough investigation is underway, with findings to be made public.
Odunola reaffirmed the brigade's commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that operational procedures will be reviewed to enhance civilian safety. He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
