Court keeps driver in custody after killing garbage collector in São Paulo

São Paulo justice converted to preventive detention the arrest of Chinese businessman Guofang Huang, 53, who hit and killed garbage collector Diego Rafael da Silva, 19, in Barra Funda.

The accident occurred on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2026, on Rua do Bosque. Diego had worked for two months at Loga and was collecting waste from a container when he was hit by a Land Rover Discovery driven by Huang. The truck was parked and properly signaled.

Huang fled the scene but returned minutes later and was arrested in flagrante. The breathalyzer test recorded 0.73 mg/l of alcohol, above the 0.34 mg/l limit. The case was registered as intentional homicide.

At the custody hearing on Monday, July 27, the court accepted the Civil Police request and kept Huang detained. The defense said it is following the investigation and that circumstances are still being clarified.

Diego leaves behind a one-year-old daughter and his pregnant wife. He was treated but died at Santa Casa hospital.
