Crypto bridges lose over $35 million in attacks

Multiple cross-chain protocols were drained of more than $35 million in a series of attacks spanning six hours. The incidents targeted bridges and staking contracts on Arbitrum, Ethereum and Bitcoin scaling networks.

AFX Trade, a decentralized perpetuals exchange on Arbitrum, lost about $24.15 million after an attacker compromised validator signing keys for a bridge it operates. The stolen USDC was moved to Ethereum and swapped for roughly 12,467 ETH.

Verus’s Ethereum bridge was drained of $7.54 million in ether, tokenized Bitcoin and stablecoins. The exploit reused the same contract path as a May incident, after funds were redeposited on July 8.

B² Network lost approximately $3.86 million when an attacker seized upgrade authority over its token staking contract. The protocol said it had contained the incident and would compensate affected users.

Security firms Blockaid and PeckShield reported that none of the attacks broke underlying cryptography. Each involved either logic flaws or compromised off-chain keys.

Initial reactions on X highlighted concerns over repeated bridge exploits due to compromised keys and admin privileges, with skepticism about cross-chain security and reminders on the need for better key management and due diligence in DeFi.

Allbridge Core has paused its cross-chain stablecoin protocol after losing roughly 1.65 million dollars in a flash loan attack on its Solana liquidity pools. The attacker used a 1.12 million dollar flash loan from Kamino to manipulate pool ratios before withdrawing assets and bridging them to Ethereum.

AFX and Verus suffered combined losses of $31.69 million in separate incidents on the Ethereum network. A third protocol, B², halted staking after unauthorized access to its upgrade authority.

Decentralized finance recorded far fewer losses in recent years, according to new industry data. Total incidents dropped from $2.62 billion in 2022 to $534 million in 2024. A single November 2025 exploit across six networks illustrated the remaining threat.

North Korean state-backed hackers have stolen more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017, accounting for 76% of all crypto hack losses in 2026. The groups, including Lazarus and DPRK, drained $577 million from DeFi platforms in April alone. TRM Labs highlighted a shift to sophisticated tactics, including in-person social engineering.

A federal case is unfolding over $71 million in frozen cryptocurrency following the Kelp DAO exploit, as Aave seeks to release the funds for DeFi recovery. Victims of decades-old North Korean terrorist acts have filed a restraining notice against Arbitrum DAO, claiming the 30,765 ETH as DPRK-linked property. The dispute pits recent hack victims against long-standing terrorism judgment holders.

Bitcoin and Ether posted their steepest weekly declines since the 2022 FTX collapse as the broader crypto market shed roughly $390 billion in value. The selloff followed a strong U.S. jobs report and mounting concerns over interest rates and competition from AI investments.
