A Tesla Cybertruck owner in Chicago experienced an embarrassing incident when the vehicle's full self-driving software caused it to crash into a garage door while picking up his daughter. Dennis Brim, who trusted the system, offered to cover the damages and remains a strong advocate for the technology despite the mishap. He attributes the error possibly to the black-painted garage door being mistaken for darkness.
Dennis Brim, a Cybertruck owner from Chicago, shared a frustrating and humiliating experience on the Tesla Cybertruck Facebook group. On the day of the incident, Brim was using Tesla's latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software version 14.2 to pick up his daughter from her roommate's house. The drive proceeded smoothly until the truck entered the driveway on its own. Instead of stopping, it drove straight into the closed garage door.
Brim recounted seeing the truck approach the door but chose not to intervene, having built trust in the system. 'I saw I was getting close, but I completely trusted the truck because the vehicle had earned my trust,' he wrote. The crash left him mortified, especially since it occurred at his daughter's friend's home, potentially affecting her socially.
After backing up, Brim inspected the damage with the homeowner's father and immediately apologized. 'I told the dad, "Whatever the damages, let me know, I’ll cover it," but I can’t believe this. I am so embarrassed,' he stated. Brim speculated that the black garage door might have been perceived by the software as a dark parking spot, prompting the truck to attempt entry.
Despite the embarrassment, Brim's enthusiasm for Tesla remains undiminished. A longtime owner since purchasing his first Model X in 2016, he now owns a Model Y and the Cybertruck. He used FSD without issues to drive home for his son's soccer tournament and emphasized his role as a shareholder and advocate. 'I’m not even criticizing Tesla; I’m probably a bigger Tesla fan than anyone... We can’t have any accidents like this,' he added. To protect the brand, Brim plans to share the story only with fellow Tesla enthusiasts.
