Delhi Police have written to ride-hailing companies Uber, Ola and Rapido after the accused in the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Mehrauli was found to have a criminal history and had worked as a cab driver without police verification.
Early on Monday, Bashu Kumar Singh allegedly abducted the girl from a footpath near a Metro station in South Delhi’s Mehrauli, raped and strangled her, then dumped her body near the Gurgaon-Faridabad border. He was arrested later the same day after police used CCTV footage, vehicle registration checks and GPS tracking.
Singh, 29, faces five criminal cases in Bihar dating back to 2015, including two for attempt to murder and three for assault. He had driven cabs for the three platforms in Delhi-NCR for about 10 years. Police sources said he had not undergone the mandatory police verification.
Delhi Police wrote to the companies seeking his work history, verification records and any past complaints. The accused is in police custody until Thursday and was injured in the leg during his arrest.
His brother Jaikishan Singh said the family wants a fair trial. “If Bashu is guilty, please hang him,” he stated. The brother described the Bihar cases as typical property disputes in the area.
