Devano challenges himself to play jamet character in Check Out Sekarang, Pay Later film

Actor Devano portrays Mail, a funkot DJ with a jamet style, in the film Check Out Sekarang, Pay Later. This role presents a fresh challenge for him, differing from his previous acting experiences. The movie depicts the struggle against illegal online loan debts.

Devano Danendra, a young Indonesian actor, has been cast as Mail in the upcoming film Check Out Sekarang, Pay Later. The character is depicted as a man with a jamet style—a term for flashy and unconventional appearance—who works as a funkot DJ, referring to disc jockeys playing funky house and dangdut music. Devano revealed that this marks his first time tackling such a role, requiring him to wear a wig and adapt to an unfamiliar style.

At a press conference in the Senayan area of Jakarta on Tuesday (January 6, 2026), Devano stated, "This is the first time I've been a jamet, wearing a wig too. Basically, this role is totally different from my previous films, so it's really challenging." He also admitted difficulty immersing into the character, as the funkot music genre contrasts sharply with his personal preference for pop songs. "The music alone is so different from Devano. I like more pop songs, so yeah, I had to learn DJ funkot for this role," he added.

To prepare, director Surya Ardy Octaviand challenged Devano to disguise himself as DJ Smile and immerse in the funkot DJ community during the workshop. "During this film's workshop, I was also challenged to disguise as DJ Smile, really becoming a funkot DJ at some place. I was told to pretend to be a funkot DJ, so I could feel directly what it's like to be a funkot DJ," Devano recounted.

The film's plot centers on Tina, played by Amanda Manopo, a winner of a low-budget beauty contest trapped in online loan (pinjol) debts due to her extravagant spending habits. She works at a pinjol office to repay debts for herself and her younger brother, Umski (Fajar Sadboy). Along the way, Tina meets Mail and together they uncover an illegal pinjol network involving influential figures. The movie highlights Gen Z consumerism culture and is scheduled for theatrical release on February 5, 2026. Other cast members include Jovial Da Lopez, Sastra Silalahi, and Wavi Zihan.
