Disney live-action Moana eyes $130M global opening

Disney's live-action adaptation of its 2016 animated hit Moana is projected to open to more than $60 million domestically and $130 million worldwide this weekend.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as demigod Maui and Catherine Laga’aia in the title role. It is directed by Thomas Kail.

Advance ticket sales stand at around $4 million, supporting expectations for a $60 million-plus domestic start. The movie is booked in 3,900 theaters with premium formats including IMAX, PLFs, 3D and 4DX.

The Los Angeles premiere is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Hollywood Bowl, with previews beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday. Overseas markets excluding Japan and Italy are forecast to contribute $70 million to $75 million.

The original Moana earned $82 million over its five-day Thanksgiving opening in 2016, while the recent animated sequel Moana 2 grossed $389 million globally in its debut weekend.
