St. Louis Cardinals starter Dustin May left Thursday's series finale against the Atlanta Braves in the first inning with a right ankle contusion after a line drive hit him.
May entered the bottom of the first with a 3-0 lead following Jordan Walker's three-run home run. With the bases loaded he allowed a one-out three-run double to Dominic Smith after the ball deflected off his ankle, giving the Braves a 4-3 advantage.
May remained on his knees for several minutes while manager Oliver Marmol and the training staff attended to him. He threw warmup pitches and continued to face three more batters before Marmol replaced him with left-hander Justin Bruihl.
The outing marked May's first start since he missed his previous turn due to lower back tightness. The Cardinals had opened the game with a three-run lead but saw the Braves tie the score in the first inning.
