On February 2, 2026, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia commemorated the 130th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa under the guiding theme 'From Bitter History to Bright Future.' President Taye Atske Sellassie stated in his address that securing access to the Red Sea is an untouchable red line of sovereignty inherited from the victories at Adwa. He noted that Adwa's fighters possessed a broad vision for Ethiopia and interpreted Adwa as signifying freedom, prosperity, and productive endeavors.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) remarked during social media outreach that today is the day the sun rose in the darkened sky over all of Africa and black people. He said Ethiopia broke its chains, defended its sovereignty, and has maintained its authority for 3,000 years. Honoring ancestors through blood sacrifice, he urged living in unity and love to advance Adwa's legacy and overcome poverty and division.
Lij Daniel Jote Mesfin, president of the Association of Ancient Ethiopian Patriots, asserted that Ethiopia must reveal its status as a land of victors to any force approaching with malice. He described the Adwa era as renewed, with its secret being deep love of country, and called for extending the Adwa victory to other actions to elevate Ethiopia.
President Taye stated that our generation echoes the voice of patriotism, resilience, knowledge, discipline, and collaborative building. The Battle of Adwa established a historic pillar for Ethiopian dignity worldwide and lit the torch of freedom for Africa and black people, with contributions from both men and women.
