Father of Henry Borel seeks annulment of Monique trial

The father of Henry Borel filed an appeal on Monday seeking to annul the jury verdict that convicted Monique Medeiros of omission and reclassified the homicide charge from intentional to negligent.

Lawyer Cristiano Medina, representing Leniel Borel, claimed flaws in the questions posed to the jurors. He stated that the questions created contradictions in the verdict and that juror sovereignty requires clear and coherent answers. Medina noted that the jurors had already recognized Monique's participation in the facts before new questions led to incompatible conclusions. The appeal requests a new trial. Monique's defense maintains that changing one question corrected an error and that the negligence thesis was presented from the start. Rio prosecutors also appealed the ruling and will submit detailed reasons later this week. The ten-day trial ended last week. Monique left prison on Thursday after serving her one-year-and-four-month sentence for omission.
