Five students booked for ragging at Pune ILS law college

Police in Pune have booked five students of Indian Law Society (ILS) Law College for ragging a second-year student. The 35-year-old complainant alleged the incidents occurred between October and December 2024-2025 after he reported alcohol consumption in the hostel. An FIR has been registered under the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999.

An FIR was registered at Deccan Gymkhana police station on Saturday based on a complaint from the student, who was a first-year LLB student at the time. He reported alcohol consumption by some students in the hostel on October 6, 2024. The accused, in their early 20s, then allegedly ragged him by verbally abusing him, blowing cigarette smoke at him, breaking his room's glass door, throwing eggs at it, and spitting gutkha on it between October 6, 2024, and December 25, 2025.

The complainant informed college authorities but alleged no action was taken. He then approached the University Grants Commission's anti-ragging helpline, leading to an internal committee probe. "The committee submitted its report to the UGC. The UGC has given me a copy of the report. As I studied the report, I feel that the report is flawed and I do not accept it. That is why I have filed a complaint application to the police," the complainant stated in the FIR.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Krushikesh Rawale said, "Our probe will focus on establishing the sequence of events and investigating the allegations made by the complainant. The FIR has been filed after the preliminary inquiry." College Principal Deepa Paturkar did not respond to calls for comment.
